Pitchside Europe: European Team of the Season

“Zlatan Ibrahimović enjoyed his most prolific season to date with Milan, Bayern Munich’s Mario Gómez plundered goals with remarkable consistency, and Falcao shot Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory, but Huntelaar outscored them all. The Dutchman’s sparkling partnership with Raúl fired Schalke to Champions League qualification and with 29 goals, he trailed only Messi, Ronaldo and Robin van Persie in the running for the European Golden Shoe.”

Pitchside Europe signed off for the 2011-2012 campaign by selecting a team of the season from players plying their trade outside the English Premier League. You can see the team (and then vent your spleen about my preposterous selections) here.

  • I would have Kompany and Yaya Toure in that team instead of Mascherano (though he has been excellent) and Kagawa. Both were key in City winning the Premier league title.

Also can’t see how Van Persie doesn’t get in that team, he has been fantastic all season and dragged Arsenal into a third place that seemed impossible at the start of the season. He has easily been the best out and out striker this season. Huntelaar has been good, but not the best.

Thanks for your comment, Kane. As the article states, the team only included players who ply their trade outside the Premier League.

Like most people I skipped the disclaimer and didn’t realize the condition until reading a few comments, but even at that the only choice I thought questionable was the left back…..and that’s mostly because I’m totally unaware of him. The rest of the best-11 is plausible even with England included I’d say.
