Summer holiday

Football Further will be on holiday until the middle of August, during which time the site will be under-going what the French call ‘un relooking’, so apologies in advance if any visitors during that period find the blog looking like the cyber equivalent of a building site.

Thank you to all the visitors and commenters who have accessed the site since it was launched in late November. Football Further was recently ranked the 26th most influential football blog in the United Kingdom and Ireland by Wikio, which is no mean feat for a one-man, part-time operation. Feedback, criticism and suggestions for future features are always welcome.

Below is a selection of the most popular posts from the last eight months or so.

Great work with the blog. Hopefully you’ll be back from holiday full of fresh tactical theories.

I’ve been meaning to ask, did you invent the “false 10” term?

  • Tom:

Thanks Carlton. I think I may well have invented the ‘false 10’ term, yes. I’m not convinced it’s a particularly water-tight designation though. It was just something that occurred to me when I was watching Ozil and Sneijder and saw how high up the pitch they were playing.

    • Well I think you should claim it before Jonathan Wilson steals it :p

Sneijder is an interesting one because he finished as Netherlands’ top scorer and in fact was their leading shooter during the WC. How would you differentiate a false 10 from a support striker?

  • Tom:

I think you’d expect a support striker to play in the general vicinity of the centre-forward (a la Cantona or Bergkamp), but players like Sneijder and Ozil usually play a little bit deeper. The margins are exceptionally fine though. I think the simplest way to sum it up would be to say that a ‘false 10’ is basically an attacking midfielder masquerading as an extremely mobile support striker.
