I’d go for Robben’s as the best goal of the season. Best team goal – Xavi. Well it’s the only team goal on that list…
I think it’s fair to call the Rooney goal a team goal as well, isn’t it? And Danny Murphy’s pass is part of the reason why Davies’s goal is so impressive.
This Inter team goal came 11th, incidentally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB9GEm-7Vzg
True, but my criteria for team goal was 15+ passes ;)
That’s a terrible criteria. A team goal can be scored with much fewer passes than that.
In fact, one could even argue that a goal is a team goal even when only one player touched the ball, if the others positioned themselves well and opened space for him.
All are Brilliant goals hard to disagree. Though i would put them in different order. Best individual goal i think Robben (esp because of timing and importance of the goal) followed by Figueroa. Best team goal surely Rooney one. That’s probably one of the best counter attacking goals ever.
Cheers Konark. Goals are in chronological order though. Don’t think I could bring myself to pick a favourite, although I love that goal by Hazard. Reminds me of this famous George Best effort: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6s8QRzXnjA
Best ever counter attacking goal was actually probably Ronaldo’s against Arsenal in the Champions League last season. Two great counters, same two teams. There’s clearly something in that.
Tactically Ferguson showed last season (and Mourinho again did this season) that the way to beat possession-based sides like the current Arsenal side is through precision counter attacks.
Mourinho did the same to Barca. Surprisingly Fergie didn’t use the same tactics against Barcelona in the final, and it cost them.

Robben v United goal of the season for me.
Rooney’s goal wasn’t even the best goal in that match, let alone one of the best of the season (Nani’s was brilliant, Almunia got plenty of blame for that but I think the chip was sublime).
Messi’s wasn’t even his best of the season either. The four he got against Arsenal (especially the third) were amazing but I’d say the first he got against Santander, after the one-two with Xavi, was a perfect goal; excellent teamwork culminating in individual genius.
I’ve got two problems with that Nani goal. It was a fantastic dribble to begin with but: a. Almunia actually pushed it into the net (it might not have gone in otherwise); and b. I think it was meant to be a cross.
it was definetely a cross. Almunia just made a mess of it.
Not sure it was a cross. Seemed too well floated over Almunia and I maintain even the top goalkeepers in Europe would’ve let it in.
Of course we’ll never know because Almunia is certainly not one of those. That being said, I still reckon the goal owed more to the brilliance of Nani and less to the ineptitude of Almunia. For me it going in regardless of Almunia’s appalling flap at the ball.
*was going in, even.
Good list, the only one I would add would be Christian Maggio’s stunning volley against Livorno, fantastic goal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo7g7zD4MHc&NR=1
Yeah, Maggio’s goal was close. I think Mannini’s volley just edges it by virtue of the build-up. Maggio’s was a more technically difficult strike though.
Great list there Tom.
I’ve never seen that Hazard goal before, that really is fantastic. That acceleration and then the following strides really takes out so many players and he has some great balance to smoothly pass it into the far corner.
How impressive has he been during the season as a whole?
He’s been superb. Five goals, eight assists, Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year and a place in the Team of the Season. Plus he wants to stay put next season, which is great for French football.

very nice find!!
The problem with the Rooney goal is the three Arsenal midfielders who are between Rooney and the goal as his pass is played, but all of which jog back and allow Rooney to run between all three of them to finish. I personally don’t think a goal scored due to such glaring defensive frailties counts as goal of the season, a goal of the season should be a goal which even the best defenders in the world would have struggled to stop.
Good point. I also think the goal you linked below is an excellent one and goes to show just how good Arsenal were prior to Robin Van Persie’s injury. Obviously their season ended badly but it was rare that Vermaelen, Fabregas and Van Persie played together.
When they did, Arsenal were a genuine force. Take the spine out of any team and they’ll struggle, as Arsenal did. United too were unfortunate with injuries, both teams missing as many as nine at a single time. Chelsea were more fortunate, missing only a few.
I can think of two technically better, higher profile Robben goals in the final stages of the Champions League than that effort.
Also I like this, four passes, three nutmegs, 10 seconds, goal (from 2m47s in this vid): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTTjyZwAWdU&t=2m47s
